Let me tell you a story about a tree. On our plantation we don't plant just one kind of tree — we mean to mix several of differing natures. Today we'll explain why with a true story — one that really happened in the history of Indonesian forestry, and that explains better than anything why we designed our forest the way we did.
Act 1 There was a tree like this
Would you believe a tree like this existed?
Five or six years after planting, it's already thick enough to harvest. It sinks its roots without complaint into harsh acidic soil that other trees wouldn't dare — land that washes away red in the rain. And that's not all. Using bacteria living in its roots, this tree captures nitrogen straight from the air. In plain terms, it makes its own fertilizer. It grows well with less feeding, and its wood is fine raw material for pulp and paper.
For anyone in forestry, this is a dream tree. It grows fast, lives anywhere, and even enriches the soil. And indeed, from the 1980s this tree swept across the hills of Indonesia and Malaysia — for over twenty years, across more than a million hectares.
The tree's name is Acacia mangium. It was the king of tropical plantations.
And no one thought this dynasty would ever end.
Act 2 A shadow rose from the soil
The end began where no one was looking.
It was somewhere in the second, then third rotation of cutting and replanting acacia on the same ground. The trees began to wither for no reason. Leaves yellowed, branches dried, and trees that had been fine the day before toppled over dead. Dig up the roots and they were black with rot.
There were two culprits. One was a fungus called Ceratocystis — a wilt disease that clogs the tree's water channels and dries it to death from within. The other was Ganoderma, a root rot that eats up from below. Monkeys and squirrels joined in, gnawing the bark, and every wound became a doorway for the fungi.
The numbers testify to the disaster. In South Sumatra, acacia plantation productivity plunged from 22–35 cubic meters per hectare a year to below 15. Less than half. The king that had been a dream tree was now a tree that lost money the more you planted it.
Most frightening of all, once the disease settled into the soil there was no undoing it. No spray, no tilling would clear it. One by one, the plantation companies gave up on acacia. A twenty-year dynasty had collapsed before a fungus too small to see.
Act 3 An heir summoned in haste
When the king fell, people searched desperately for the next tree. The one called onto the stage was Eucalyptus pellita.
Here's a point not to misunderstand: pellita didn't take the throne because it was superior to acacia. It was chosen for one reason only — it endured that fungus a little better than acacia did. Pellita wasn't wholly immune either, but it held out better, it resisted rust and leaf blight, and its timber and pulp were good.
In truth pellita had already arrived in Sumatra in the early 1990s. But it was a supporting player. While the king lived on, there was no reason to notice it. Then, in the mid-2000s when acacia collapsed, the spotlight fell suddenly on this understudy. The heir wasn't so much fully prepared as simply the one left standing after every other candidate had fallen.
Act 4 Growing truly strong
Had the story ended there, pellita would be remembered as just "the lucky stand-in that survived." But over the past twenty years, this tree grew genuinely strong — with human hands.
Indonesian research institutes and plantation companies carried a pellita breeding program across generations. They planted thousands of trees, repeatedly selecting only the best-growing, most disease-resistant individuals, then cloned those champions into uniform, superior stock. Not stopping there, they crossed pellita with its eucalyptus cousins to create hybrids that gathered only the strengths.
The results were striking. In one trial, a well-made hybrid grew more than three times faster than pure pellita. Superior clones selected in Java outperformed even already-improved seedlings.
By now pellita was no longer a stopgap. Refined through human eyes and hands, it had become a main species in its own right. The dynasty had fully changed hands.
Act 5 The weight of the crown
But a quiet warning hides in this story — perhaps the most important part of it.
Pellita, too, is not wholly free of that fungal disease. It merely endures better than acacia. And Ceratocystis has already begun turning up, here and there, in pellita plantations across Indonesia and Malaysia. More chilling still: this pathogen has the ability to adapt and evolve to new hosts. The disease today's pellita withstands, tomorrow's pellita may not.
Moreover, switching from acacia to eucalyptus also meant switching from a tree that made its own nitrogen to one that could not. As the king changed, the soil quietly grew poorer, and the management burden people had to carry grew heavier by just that much.
History can repeat. The very logic that felled acacia applies to pellita just the same. Plant one kind of tree endlessly on the same ground, and an enemy that hunts only that tree will surely come. That is the lesson this story leaves us. Today's king, too, is not free of the crown's weight.
Closing And so we
From this history, we learned three things.
- First, we don't bet everything on one tree. So instead of packing the ground with a single kind, we plant several trees of differing natures together — a forest where, if one species falls ill, the whole doesn't collapse; where some trees enrich the soil and others thrive on that strength, each covering the other's weakness.
- Second, even a strong tree today is not forever. So we choose improved, superior varieties with care, and never slacken in watching for disease before it arrives.
- Third, which variety you choose is half the battle. Even among pellita, the seed you select from one tree or another yields an entirely different tree. So we take care even in choosing a single seedling.
A king does not last by being perfect. The king who lasts is the one who knows he too may someday fall. We mean to treat the forest that way. Rather than crowning a single kind of king, we plant many kinds of trees that will lean on one another and last together.
