"Burning wood still releases carbon. So why call it renewable?" It's the question we hear most often — and the fairest one. Today we'll answer it without numbers, in plain words.
The carbon molecule is innocent
Let's start honestly. CO₂ from burning wood pellets and CO₂ from burning coal do exactly the same thing in the atmosphere. The CO₂ itself is no different. The difference is one thing only — where the carbon in that CO₂ was taken from.
Coal's carbon was sealed deep underground millions of years ago. Dig it up and burn it, and you add carbon that wasn't part of the cycle the Earth is currently running. Once it's out, there's practically no putting it back.
A tree's carbon is different. It's carbon the tree pulled directly out of the atmosphere within the last few years. Burn it and it returns to the air — but plant a new tree in its place, and that tree absorbs it back as it grows. From the atmosphere's point of view, it's carbon coming home. That's why we call it 'recent carbon'.

Sustainable biomass is money from a salary
Spend it this month, and more comes in next month — as long as you keep working.
But there are conditions
Stopping here would be half an explanation. The 'recent carbon' logic doesn't hold on its own. Just as a salary only arrives if you keep working, this logic comes with conditions that must be kept.
- You must replant. Harvest without planting and it's just emissions. This is why the first sentence on our website is "We plant more than we harvest" — not a slogan, but the precondition for this business to make sense.
- You must shrink the time gap. Burning takes a moment; regrowing takes years. We plant fast-growing trees on a short rotation precisely to make that gap as small as possible.
- You must count the process emissions too. Harvesting, processing and shipping still burn fuel. That's why we always say 'roughly' when we talk about reductions — and why we designed the distance from plantation to export port to be short.
Pellets made by clearing primary forest, pellets with no replanting behind them — that's not recent carbon, that's just emissions. Those pellets and the ones we intend to make share a name but are different things. Our next story will take up exactly this difference: "Not all wood pellets are the same."
Recent carbon isn't good because it's recent — it's acceptable because it gets refilled. And refilling doesn't happen by itself. We have to plant.
