Our project is rooted in West Kalimantan, on the island of Borneo in Indonesia. Open a map to find it, and one thing stands out: the equator runs right across this land. Picture a tree in a temperate land. Trees in Korea bud in spring, grow lush in summer, shed their leaves in autumn, and halt their growth in winter. They grow only about half the year, and sleep through the cold for the rest. This is also why trees form rings: growing seasons and resting seasons alternate, each carving one more ring. 적도의 나무는 다릅니다. 서칼리만탄은 일 년 내내 기온이 27도 안팎으로 거의 변하지 않고, 낮의 길이도 사철 열두 시간으로 한결같습니다. 겨울이 없으니 나무가 잠들 이유도 없습니다. 이곳의 나무는 한 해 내내, 쉬지 않고 자랍니다. 봄을 기다릴 필요도, 겨울을 견딜 필요도 없이 매일매일 조금씩 몸을 불려 갑니다. Trees on the equator are different. In West Kalimantan the temperature holds near 27 degrees all year, and the day stays twelve hours long through every season. With no winter, a tree has no reason to sleep. Here, trees grow all year round, without rest. With no spring to wait for and no winter to endure, they add to themselves a little more each day. Pohon di khatulistiwa berbeda. Di Kalimantan Barat suhu bertahan sekitar 27 derajat sepanjang tahun, dan siang tetap dua belas jam di setiap musim. 같은 나무라도 이 땅에서는 훨씬 빨리 자란다는 뜻입니다. 우리가 심는 속성수들이 몇 해 만에 연료로 쓸 만큼 굵어지는 것도, 이 쉼 없는 성장 덕분입니다. 적도는 나무에게 일 년 열두 달을 온전히 내어 줍니다. It means the same tree grows far faster on this land. The fast-growing species we plant reach fuel-worthy thickness in just a few years thanks to this ceaseless growth. The equator gives a tree all twelve months of the year, whole and undivided. Spesies cepat tumbuh yang kami tanam mencapai ketebalan yang layak jadi bahan bakar hanya dalam beberapa tahun berkat pertumbuhan tanpa henti ini. 하늘이 대신 물을 주는 땅A land where the sky waters for youTanah tempat langit menyiram untukmu
나무가 자라는 데 햇빛만큼 중요한 것이 물입니다. 서칼리만탄은 이 점에서도 축복받은 땅입니다. 이곳은 일 년 내내 비가 넉넉히 내리는 열대우림 기후로, 가장 덜 내리는 달조차도 상당한 비가 옵니다. 메마른 계절이 따로 없다시피 한 것이지요. As vital as sunlight to a growing tree is water. Here, too, West Kalimantan is a blessed land. It has a tropical rainforest climate with generous rain all year, and even its driest month still brings substantial rainfall. There is, in effect, no dry season at all. Sama pentingnya dengan sinar matahari bagi pohon yang tumbuh adalah air. Dalam hal ini pun Kalimantan Barat adalah tanah yang diberkati. Ia beriklim hutan hujan tropis dengan hujan berlimpah sepanjang tahun, dan bahkan bulan terkeringnya masih membawa curah hujan yang cukup besar. Nyaris tak ada musim kemarau sama sekali.
이것이 왜 중요할까요. 물을 일부러 대주지 않아도, 하늘이 대신 나무에게 물을 주기 때문입니다. 넓은 조림지에 사람이 일일이 물을 주는 일은 엄청난 수고와 비용이 듭니다. 그런데 이 땅에서는 자연이 그 일을 맡아 줍니다. 따뜻한 기온과 넉넉한 비, 나무가 자라는 데 필요한 두 가지를 이곳은 애쓰지 않아도 늘 갖추고 있습니다. Why does this matter? Because without deliberately watering them, the sky waters the trees for us. To water a vast plantation by hand demands enormous labor and cost. But on this land, nature takes that task upon itself. Warm temperature and ample rain — the two things a growing tree needs — this place holds always, without any effort. Mengapa ini penting? 바다로 이어지는 길The road that leads to the seaJalan yang menuju laut
땅이 아무리 좋아도, 만든 연료를 실어 내보낼 길이 멀면 소용이 반감됩니다. 우드펠릿은 결국 바다를 건너 한국과 일본의 발전소로 가야 하니까요. However good the land, if the road for shipping out the finished fuel is long, its value is halved. In the end, wood pellets must cross the sea to the power plants of Korea and Japan. Sebagus apa pun tanahnya, jika jalan untuk mengirim bahan bakar jadi itu jauh, nilainya berkurang separuh. 서칼리만탄은 이 점에서도 유리합니다. 우리 조림지와 공장에서 가까운 곳에 큰 배가 드나드는 항구가 있어, 만든 펠릿을 먼 육로로 돌리지 않고 곧장 배에 실을 수 있습니다. 나무를 기르는 숲과, 그것을 실어 내보내는 바다가 가까이 붙어 있는 것입니다. 앞선 이야기에서 우리가 "가까운 숲과 가까운 바다"를 강조했던 까닭이 여기에 있습니다. 짧은 길은 운송의 수고와 비용을 줄이고, 그만큼 연료를 태우기도 전에 새어 나가는 탄소를 줄여 줍니다. Here, too, West Kalimantan holds an advantage. Near our plantations and mill lies a port where large ships come and go, so the finished pellets can be loaded straight onto a ship without a long detour by land. The forest that grows the trees and the sea that carries them out lie close together. This is why, in an earlier story, we stressed "a near forest and a near sea." A short road cuts the labor and cost of transport, and with it, the carbon that leaks away before the fuel is ever burned. Dalam hal ini pun, Kalimantan Barat memegang keunggulan. The warmth that lets trees grow without rest, the abundance in which the sky waters them, and the nearness that leads straight to the sea. For the work of growing trees into fuel, conditions better suited than these are hard to find. Kami menetap di tanah ini bukan karena kebetulan. Kehangatan yang membuat pohon tumbuh tanpa henti, kelimpahan tempat langit menyiraminya, dan kedekatan yang menuju langsung ke laut. All we did was recognize where those gifts lay, and resolve to plant our trees upon them. Good fuel comes from good trees, and good trees grow on good ground. West Kalimantan is that good ground.
