Sometimes we are asked this: "You grow the trees in another country, but burn them in mine. So in the end, isn't it only my country's air that suffers?"
It is a sharp question. And a welcome one. Only if we can answer it head-on, without evasion, is what we do worth standing behind. So today, rather than avoiding this question, we would like to take it apart piece by piece.
First, what is true
Let us begin by admitting something honestly. "Burning anything affects the air right where it burns" — this is true. Wood pellets are no exception. Burning means combustion, and even under the cleanest management, emissions never fall to exactly zero.
So the objection — "it burns in our town, how can you call it clean?" — has grounds. We do not deny it. Only, two quite different problems are often tangled together here. Once we separate them, the answer to the question comes into focus.
Two things tangled: carbon and fine dust
One is carbon dioxide (CO₂), the greenhouse gas that warms the planet. The other is air pollutants such as fine dust, the things that foul the air right where we breathe.
These two are entirely different problems, yet they are often bundled into one, and that breeds misunderstanding. And this very tangle is the root of the "my country, another country" argument. Let us take them one at a time.
Carbon has no borders
First, carbon. Hidden inside the question "why emit it in my country?" is one important misunderstanding: carbon is not a problem of that neighborhood, but of the whole planet.
Why is that? Fine dust and carbon dioxide behave in fundamentally different ways in the air.
Fine dust is a tiny particle. Too small to see, yet a solid grain with real weight. So although it floats in the air, within days it settles to the ground or is washed down by rain. It cannot travel far and lingers near where it came from. That is why the air worsens in the very town where the chimney stands.
Carbon dioxide is not a particle but a gas. Here lies the decisive difference. Gas molecules never rest for an instant. Even in air that looks perfectly still, countless gas molecules fly in every direction at hundreds of meters per second, colliding ceaselessly. Because of this endless collision, gas gathered in one place spreads outward on its own — from where it is dense to where it is thin, slipping through any gap and evening out. This is called "diffusion."
Picture a single drop of ink in water. Even if you leave it still, without stirring, in time the ink spreads through the whole body of water and colors it evenly — because water molecules and ink molecules move and mingle without rest. Carbon dioxide in the air is just the same. Add to this the winds that circle the earth without cease, and carbon dioxide released in any one place soon spreads through the entire atmosphere of the planet.
This is not a guess but a measured fact. When scientists sample the air at dozens of places worldwide — from sea level to mountaintop, from the Arctic to the equator — the concentration of carbon dioxide comes out astonishingly similar everywhere. That is why science calls carbon dioxide a "well-mixed gas." It means the concentration of CO₂ in my country's sky is almost the same as in the sky on the far side of the globe.
Here, precisely, is the root of the misunderstanding. Fine dust piles up where it is released, so "where it was emitted" matters. But carbon dioxide mixes evenly across the whole planet no matter where it comes from, so "where" carries no meaning. Only "how much has built up across the whole earth" is the question. So the reckoning that "if it's emitted in my country, only my country loses" does not hold — not for carbon dioxide. Because carbon has no borders.
And there is something more important still. The carbon that comes from wood pellets is the very carbon the tree drew from the air as it grew. In another country a tree grows and absorbs carbon dioxide from the atmosphere; in my country that tree is burned and gives it back; and then a tree is planted again in that same place and absorbs it once more. Seen across the whole planet, the total carbon in the air does not rise. It goes round and round.
Coal is different. It takes carbon that has been locked underground for hundreds of millions of years and burns it anew. Carbon that was not in the atmosphere is newly added to it. This is the decisive difference between wood pellets and coal.
Then what about fine dust?
Now the second matter: the air right there. One thing must be made clear. What we are talking about is not "burning pellets anew into clean air."
The power plant is already burning coal right now. So the real choice is not "to burn pellets or not," but "to keep burning coal, or to switch to pellets." What we must compare against is not a clear sky, but the very chimney where coal is burning right now.
And in this comparison, wood pellets come out better than coal. Wood pellets contain far less sulfur than coal, so they release far less of the sulfur oxides that are chief culprits behind acid rain and fine dust.
Most striking of all is the amount of ash. After coal burns, ten to as much as twenty percent of its weight remains as ash. The ash of good wood pellets, by contrast, is less than one percent. The finest grades leave only 0.5 or 0.7 percent. Burn a hundred sacks, and the ash barely fills a single one.
And even this little ash is different in kind. Coal ash is a waste laced with heavy metals that must be treated and buried. But the ash of wood pellets is the calcium, potassium, and phosphorus — minerals the tree once drew up from the soil. So it can even be returned to fields and gardens as fertilizer. What the tree received from the earth is given back to the earth. Not a waste to be discarded, but a nutrient returning to the soil.
So put precisely, it is not "pellets foul my country's air," but "pellets foul my country's air less than the coal that is burning right now."
As for why it is burned in my country
Finally, let us answer the question itself: "why grow the trees in another country and burn them in mine?"
In truth, this question is the same as "why use energy in my country?" A nation may use a great deal of energy, yet if it lacks enough fuel resources at home, it brings in oil, coal, and gas from other countries and uses them. Pellets are no different. It is natural to use the fuel where the energy is consumed.
Only, wood pellets have one difference. Though an imported fuel like the others, their carbon goes round in a cycle, and they foul the local air less than coal. What we do is to supply that fuel in the most stable and sustainable way we can.
Behind the question "why burn another country's trees in mine?" were, in truth, two worries mixed together: carbon and fine dust. Carbon spreads evenly across the whole planet no matter where it comes from, so the question is not "where" but "how much" — and even that carbon the tree draws back in as it grows, so it goes round in a cycle. Fine dust is indeed a local matter, but what we must measure against is not a clear sky; it is the coal burning right now, and wood pellets are cleaner than that coal. We will not claim wood pellets are a perfectly clean fuel. Carbon is spent carrying them by ship, and what rises when they burn is not nothing at all. We only mean to do the better of the choices, and to do it well — without inflating it, and without hiding it.
