In our last story we said the 'recent carbon' logic only holds if certain conditions are kept. This is the sequel — what pellets that fail those conditions look like, and why all of biomass has come to take the blame for them.
How pellets earned their bad name
Search for criticism of biomass and you'll find roughly these stories: healthy forests flattened whole and turned into pellets. Nobody checking whether anything gets replanted. Suppliers who can't say which forest the feedstock came from. And pellets shipped halfway around the planet.
Let's be honest here. Much of this criticism is fair. Pellets made that way have existed, and they aren't recent carbon — they're a whole forest gone up in smoke. The problem is that pellets made differently carry the same name, and take the same blame.
Same name, different things
A pellet that deserves the criticism and one that doesn't look identical at the factory — both are the same small cylinders. The difference is decided before the factory, in the forest.
So we designed for this from the start
Our project isn't built to dodge these criticisms but to answer each one structurally — not good deeds added on later, but a business skeleton that is itself the answer.
- We don't buy feedstock — we plant and grow it. Asked where the material comes from, we can answer: "from where we planted it." All planting and harvesting happens inside government-permitted production forest.
- We plant more than we harvest. Planting beyond each year's harvest grows total forest stock. Replanting isn't a promise — it's a required step that produces next year's feedstock, tied into the business itself.
- We record the history and let others verify it. Every step from planting to shipment is recorded and checked against third-party certification like FSC and SVLK. We believe the right sentence is not "trust us" but "come and check."
- We chose near forest and near seas. Plantation to plant, plant to export port, and on to Korea and Japan — all short legs. The surest way to cut transport emissions is geography, not effort.
Want to tell them apart? Ask three questions
If you ever need to judge a wood pellet business — as a utility, an investor, or simply someone curious — three questions are enough. Where does the feedstock come from? Do you replant where you cut? Can you show the records? A pellet that answers all three without flinching has earned the words 'recent carbon'. We intend to be a company that welcomes these questions.
Most criticism of pellets is fair — of some pellets. Under one name there are different things, and the difference is decided in the forest. So when you look at a pellet, it is worth asking: which forest did this come from, and how?
